Brothel licences and approved managers certificates

There are strict rules under the Prostitution Act 1999 (the Act) about:

  • how brothels in Queensland operate
  • who can be licensed to operate a brothel
  • who can be certified to manage a brothel.

To operate a brothel in Queensland you must have a brothel licence.

To manage a brothel in Queensland you must have a manager’s certificate.

Licensing and sole operator sex workers

Sole operator sex workers don’t need a licence from the Authority or any other government agency. They must comply with relevant provisions of the Prostitution Act and Chapter 22A of the Criminal Code.

Applying for a brothel licence or approved manager certificate

To apply for a brothel licence or approved manager certificate you must:

You must fill out the right forms and pay the fee to the Authority when you apply for a new brothel licence or approved manager certificate.

Application processing cannot commence until both the application form and fee are received by the PLA.

Under the Prostitution Act 1999 (the Act), you must have a licence from the Authority if you want to operate a brothel in Queensland.

Under the Prostitution Act 1999 (the Act), if you want to work as a brothel manager, you must apply to the Authority for an approved manager’s certificate.
